Pilgrim

pilgrim To be wild is not to be crazy or psychotic. True wildness is a love of nature, a delight in silence, a voice free to say spontaneous things, and an exuberant curiosity in the face of the unknown.
-Robert Bly

It came to pass on this day, that the wild man who created such havoc casting out demon shadows he saw in others and himself; and the inquisitive boy yearning for knowledge at every waking moment, never getting enough, are one and the same for they are you and me, forced into enchantment and awareness, abiding in a lonely house off to the left-hand way of ‘being’ by the river of  contemplation.

Upon leave-taking, after suffering death and annihilation of ego’s to discover compassion… the jeweled still point lying at the heart of the soul, the two become one, as our Pilgrim emerges as though from dust, contemplating the eastern sun, setting this intention into motion…

“I sail forth to live for the self that gives to the other; to emerge from the laborite as one; to bring forth and resolve all that I hide so deep; to become the peaceful warrior, to conquer the twin dragons of doubt and fear. To turn thoughts around that invade me in the early morning hours of negative waking…thoughts wrapped in a glove of anxiety.”

“I will be as an ocean riding the sea change; not a wave going around in circles without resolution. From this point on I take all I am and all I have learned and move beyond the ego… to get out of my own way.”

And then he went in peace…

  1. A very searching post on s subject that concerns all human beings. Ego is a ferocious being, never sleeping, always hungry. Like a serpent with two
heads, you always need to be aware. Important issue you take up and tell in
    your own unique way.
I love the Robert Bly quote…”True wildness is a love of nature…..”. 🌟

    1. Thank you, Miriam, for your comment. I do believe the ego is the culprit that robs us of our common humanity. The boy and the Wildman become one only after they recognize each other in themselves thus the Pilgrim is born.

  2. You capture quite beautifully the freedom and peace one finds when one looks deep within themselves to cast ego aside.

  3. A beautiful post, JC! 😀 The quote at the start stopped me in my tracks as I was struck by the words and particularly love the idea of ‘exuberant curiosity’! That’s the way to live! 😀 I’ve never heard of Robert Bly so will have to look him up. May we all travel on the ocean, its adventures, whatever they may be whilst avoiding the stagnating maelstrom of the swirling waves.

    1. Thank you, Annika… I’m glad you liked it. Robert Bly is a poet and author of the book, Iron John, about a boy who steals a ring from his mother’s pillow. It’s a book for men of all ages but I think women get a lot out of it too. I like you blessing about the ocean, my favorite place.

  4. Profound and ever reaching… your thoughtful post makes so much sense. How can one learn compassion without first suffering? To be able to place yourself in someone else’s shoes, erases self focus and welcomes empathy. Wonderfully expressed, JC. 🌹

  5. Absolutely love the quote by Bly that sets mood for your wonderful post!
The song tells me, like most times, that I’m in a wrong place, but I’ll check it out on YouTube.
    Enjoyed reading!
