I was gazing intently in the direction of a screen door in the kitchen of a rustic house; observing, as though I were a sentinel on duty, the backyard enclosed by a tall white fence. The house seemed unfamiliar but at the same time, something deep inside told me I knew this place. Outside stood an old wooden barrel with rusted bands wrapped around its girth, similar to the kind used to age whiskey. Looking inside I discerned that vertically it was about 3’ above ground with another 3’ buried in the ground and 3′ in width, and it was empty. Abruptly, as if on cue, the barrel began to fill with water. As the water’s surface reached the top rim, I unexpectedly heard a sound coming from within the barrel. I caught sight of a snake, waking from hibernation it seemed as it stirred to consciousness, It began to grow in length, first to my height and still longer as it continued to increase in awareness. I ran inside and the snakes tail quickly swept the concrete and lodged itself in the opening keeping the door from closing. I tried to holler for help but the words would not sound. I wondered if I could command it to be gone and with that thought, the snake disappeared. In its place, his countenance beyond reproach, a Lion appeared. I quickly discerned that I was safe. A demeanor of serenity and wisdom composed his face enclosed by a wild mane of hair. He was regal in manner and somehow telepathically related to me in latin…”vocatus atque non vocatus deus aderit.”… (Invoked or not invoked, the God will be present)
-Dream Journal Vol. 1
I have had this dream many times over the years and just as a faucet drips slowly from a rusted valve, my understanding of the dream and its understanding of me progressed gradually until I was able to write with certainty the message it was trying to convey. As much as dreams try to give meaning and understanding to the trivialities of our lives, they also invite us to stand up and notice them and convey definition to their simplistic language of symbols. They need us as much as we need them. For the soul beckons our dreams to show us the alternate path.
So I began to write an endless page into the soul of my being and explored every minute detail of mystery until they were silent no more, to fill every dark and damp cavern with illumination. This light and its appearance are the work of my life, everything leads to this moment and then we die to all misconceptions.
And what do you think this dream means?

What I get out of your description is that it could always be worse. The snake is scary, to be sure. But, a man eater is scarier.

Thanks, yes one is as bad as the other. I may do a blog post and give my interpretation.

For me, this dream seems to be saying that what you might perceive as one thing is actually much bigger than you realize, and that you may not be able to grasp the complexity of the situation, or handle the possible fallout (the snake, typifying behavior that is unexpected and potentially unhealthy), without help from someone who has more experience with processing the input (the lion), even though you may be equally unsure of the motivation behind the “helper”…

Hum, thanks for that. It’s interested. It’s completely the opposite of what I though but it is something to think over.

Snakes or serpents tend to show up in dreams in times of transition and transformation, could this be so for you? The kind and strong lion the spirit to help you through? I haven’t got a clue Jeff but even the lovely song points to the spiritual. To eternity.
Now, please don’t keep me in suspense, do tell your finding.
Mirja
who would wake up at before the lion appeared:)

Thank you, Mirja. Yes, there has been a lot of change in my life as of late. The lion reminds me C.S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. To me, the snake is our fears.

JC, blimey, that is not like any dream I have! Very metaphorical and spiritual. Mine are much more literal and ‘real’ – but in this one you seem to find safety and reassurance in the end…Love the song. My music knowledge is expanding thanks to you!

Thank you, Annika. I don’t always remember my dreams but when I do their always full of symbols and metaphor. I’m glad you like the music.

Snake could be a hidden part of your personality or the unknown dangers that slither in while lion may represent the courage needed to face it.

Thank you for the reply. Yes I can see that. For most the lion has attributes of bravery and loyalty where the snake doesn’t have any that I can think of.

I have a personal affinity with dreams, as we all dream and we all want to know the meaning of our dreams. It is quite something that you can remember as much as you do. I thin most good writing is a dream-state. This is lovely. It does beg questions, I should look up Jung and see what it truly means.

Thanks. Usually I don’t remember my dreams either, that’s why I wrote this one down. It was in so much detail. I’ve read Jung and have an idea about the meaning which I will share in a post.

Oh good because I often do not recall mine and I think it’s wonderful when we are able to and then work out the meaning

I love your writing and the way you describe things! What an interesting dream JC! So many meanings to be taken from this! Again, amazing!

Thank you, Lynn. Yes, it’s hard to pin this one down to any one idea.
